🔅🔅 One Belt One Road Initiative 🔅🔅

One Belt One Road is considered as the most ambitious foreign policy and economic initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping. It was announced in 2013 with an objective to rejuvenate the ancient trade routes connecting Asia and Europe and hence it is also known as Silk Road Economic Belt. OBOR is a network of roads, railways, oil pipelines, power grids, ports and other infrastructural projects meant to connect China to the world. This initiative comprises more than physical connections. It aims to create the world’s largest platform for economic cooperation including policy coordination, trade and financing collaboration and social and structural cooperation.

The OBOR is bifurcated into two parts- The Silk Road Economic Belt which is land-based and will connect China with Central Asia, Eastern and Western Europe and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road which is sea-based and will connect China to South-East Asia, Africa and Central Asia. The main objective of China through OBOR is to develop international clout by expanding its influence, boost its slow GDP by boosting trade through OBOR, fix the regional growth disparities between North and South China and boost Yuan’s usage amongst the countries and strengthen its role as an international currency. Although OBOR may prove beneficial to developing countries and could also boost their GDP, we should not be too optimistic about its success, as Chinese investments had let to political backlashes in the past. And it is unsure whether poor countries will be able to benefit from greater trade as they already run a huge trade deficit with China.

What was Project Manhattan?

The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada.
The project had both positive and negative effects. The significance of the Manhattan Project was that it put an end to WWII by using weapons of mass destruction and forced Japan to surrender.  The project was a desperate effort by the US to beat the Nazis to the development of a nuclear weapon.
Nuclear facilities were built at Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Hanford, Washington. The main assembly plant was built at Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Foreign portfolio investment (FPI)

FPI consists of securities and other financial assets passively held by foreign investors. It does not provide investor with direct ownership of financial assets. It is relatively liquid depending on volatility of the market. In India, FPIs are allowed to invest in various debt market instruments such as government bonds, treasury bills, state development loans (SDLs) and corporate bonds, but with certain restrictions and limits. FPI is part of country’s capital account and shown on its balance of payments (BOP).

Differences between FPI and FDI

FPI lets investor purchase stocks, bonds or other financial assets in foreign country. In this case, investor does not actively manage investments or companies that issue investment. It also does not have control over securities or business. In contrast, FDI lets investor purchase direct business interest in foreign country. The investor also controls his monetary investments and actively manages company into which he puts money. FPI is more liquid and less risky than FDI.

What is Space Junk?

Space junk is the term used to describe man-made rubbish floating in space – often litter from space exploration, including spanners, nuts, bolts, gloves and shards of space craft.
The majority of the debris in space is believed to consist of small particles but some objects are larger, including spent rocket stages, defunct satellites and collision fragments.
As many as ten million pieces of human-made debris are estimated to be circulating in space at any one time.
Experts believe that global positioning systems, international phone connections, television signals and weather forecasts could be affected by increasing levels of space junk.
The windows of space shuttles are often chipped by space junk when returning to earth.
Helicopter parenting

It describes an overcontrolling behaviour of parents which can negatively affect children’s ability to manage their emotions and deal with the challenging demands of growing up.
A study published in the journal Developmental Psychology revealed
• Children with helicopter parents may be less able to deal with the challenging demands of growing up, especially with navigating the complex school environment
• Children who developed the ability to effectively calm themselves during distressing situations and to conduct themselves appropriately had an easier time adjusting to the increasingly difficult demands of preadolescent school environments
The researchers followed 422 children over the course of eight years and assessed them at ages two, five and 10.
